Beatrice
, pronounced "Bee-AT-ris," is a town of approximately 12,500 residents, located in Gage County, Nebraska. Situated along the Big Blue River in the southeastern part of the state, Beatrice is in the heart of a rich agricultural region. It lies at the intersection of State Highway 4 and U.S. Highways 77 and 136, about 40 miles south of Lincoln and 99 miles southwest of Omaha. Ten parks in the city of Beatrice cover approximately 210 acres of land, and offer eleven ball diamonds, picnicking and playground equipment. The town is also home to a water park and the Beatrice Speedway, which features weekend racing April - September. Annual festivals in Beatrice include the Gage County Fair in July and a Homestead Celebration the last weekend of June. Several unique attractions are located in Beatrice. Yesterday's Lady - A Step Back in Time is a vintage clothing and artifacts museum housed in the historic 1887 Schmuck building. The Homestead National Monument of America commemorates the lives and accomplishments of all the pioneers who settled this land. The park includes the Daniel Freeman site, museum exhibits and videos, historic structures, hiking trails, a designated Watchable Wildlife Site and a newly-published curriculum guide for teachers. The Homestead National Monument is open year-round, Mon-Fri, 8:30am-5pm and Sat-Sun, 9am-5pm.

Southeastern Nebraska has a four-season climate with hot summers and cold winters. Temperatures vary only slightly from place to place in Nebraska, although the far west is cooler than the rest of the state. Winters in Southeast Nebraska can be extremely cold. Precipitation in this part of Nebraska averages 24 to 28 inches per year. Thunderstorms are common in spring and summer. On June 22, 2003, the largest hailstone ever measured fell in southeast Nebraska, in the city of Aurora. It measured 7 inches in diameter and had a circumference of 18.75 inches. Snowfall in southeast Nebraska averages 17 inches. Blizzards, droughts, tornadoes and windstorms are possible and have plagued Nebraskans throughout history.
