Grand-Island is a city of approximately 43,000, located in Hall County in south-central Nebraska. Founded in 1857 by German settlers, the new settlement was named La Grande Isle because it was located on the largest inland island in the world at the time. The island is formed by the Wood River and the North Platte River. When the railroad was built through the area, the settlement was moved north of the Platte River to the present location of the town. Although no longer an island, the city kept the name. Grand Island is home to several attractions, including Tornado Hill, the Heartland Events Center, a water park and the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer. In addition, there are six golf courses in the Grand Island area along with auto racing and thoroughbred horse racing. Several special events are held throughout the year in Grand Island. The Husker Harvest Days are held in mid-September and the first Saturday of October is the annual Harvest of Harmony Parade. Beginning in 2010, Grand Island will also host the annual Nebraska State Fair. One of the most unique special events in Grand Island is "The Running of the Wieners." This pup parade generates a lot of interest and in 2005, it won the Outstanding Event Award from the Nebraska Department of Travel and Tourism. Over 150 dogs take part in the event in three classes - Senior Sausages, Frankfurters and Little Smokies.

Grand Island Weather & Climate

Southeast Nebraska has a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Temperatures vary only slightly from place to place in Nebraska, although the far west is cooler than the rest of the state. Winters in Southeast Nebraska can be extremely cold. The northeast is the coldest part of the state, while the west and extreme south are the warmest. Precipitation in this part of Nebraska averages 24 to 28 inches per year. Thunderstorms are common in spring and summer. On June 22, 2003, the largest hailstone ever measured fell in southeast Nebraska, in the city of Aurora. It measured 7 inches in diameter and had a circumference of 18.75 inches. Snowfall in southeast Nebraska averages 17 inches. Blizzards, droughts, tornadoes and windstorms are possible and have plagued Nebraskans throughout history.
