Lexington is a city of approximately 10,000, located in Dawson County in south-central Nebraska. It sits along U.S. Route 30 on the Platte River, southeast of North Platte. In the 1860s, Lexington was the location of a stop along the Pony Express. The town of Lexington is noted for its relatively high proportion of Mexican-Americans for central Nebraska (over 50% of the town population), which is reflected in the Spanish language-businesses in downtown and along U.S. 30. Johnson Lake, which is one of the most popular recreational lakes in central Nebraska, is located about 9 miles southwest of town. The lake offers excellent fishing, boating, swimming, sailing, jet skiing and other activities. Other attractions in Lexington include the Heartland Museum of Military Vehicles, located adjacent to I-80, and the Dawson County Historical Museum. The town is home to numerous antique shops, several 100 year old restored homes, a family aquatic center, and also a number of wineries. The Two-Part Circle Tour consists of part of the Oregon Trail that passed through the area and the Plum Creek Massacre Sites. Special events in Lexington includes an annual rodeo in June and a car show and Labor Day Antiques and Crafts Extravaganza. This event draws visitors not only from all over Nebraska, but from many other states, as well. It won the 2004 Nebraska Event of the Year award.
