Scottsbluff is a city of about 15,000, located in Scotts Bluff County in west-central Nebraska. It is the 12th largest city in Nebraska and the largest city in the Panhandle Region of the state. Founded in 1900 across from the North Platte River, the town was named for a bluff that is now a national park called Scotts Bluff National Monument. It also sits directly across the river from the town of Gering. Together the two cities form the 7th largest urban area in Nebraska. Scotts Bluff National Monument has been a landmark of the Great Plains for hundreds of years. Towering 800 feet above the North Platte River, it served as a marker for those who traveled the Oregon, California, Mormon and Pony Express Trails. The park contains 3,000 acres of prairie land and scenic sandstone bluffs. Parts of the old trail can still be seen and the Oregon Trail Museum features a variety of exhibits of the early pioneers. A paved road and hiking trail in the park allow visitors to either drive or walk to the summit of the bluff, which offers a spectacular view of the North Platte Valley. Other attractions in or near Scottsbluff include Riverside Park and Zoo, the North Platte Valley Museum, the Wyo-Braska Natural History Museum and the Lake Minatare State Recreation Area. There are many other things to do in the area, as well, including hiking, biking, fishing, golf and camping.
