Sidney is a small town of 6,000 located in Cheyenne County in southwestern Nebraska. It is the oldest community in western Nebraska, and was "the capital of all of western Nebraska during the frontier days of settlement." During the days of the Sidney-Deadwood Gold Rush of 1876, Sidney's front street, which ran alongside the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, was lined with over 80 saloons and gambling halls, boarding houses and brothels. It was also home to the world's first 24-hour theater. The site of many street shoot-outs, Sidney gained a reputation as "The Toughest Town on the Tracks." Passengers were even advised not to leave their car when the train stopped in Sidney! Today, this town with the colorful past has 29 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the only town in western Nebraska to have the "Historic District" designation because the old buildings are not interrupted by a new building or parking lot. Sidney is also home to the Fort Sidney Complex, which houses the Cheyenne County Museum. A special Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration is held at the complex each year, and during Thanksgiving week, visitors enjoy Lamplight Tours with reenactments of a family home from the era. Other Sidney attractions include the Sidney/Deadwood Walking Trail, Points of Rock and Buffalo Bend, both located along Lodgepole Creek, the longest creek in the world.
